Etude de la dynamique de l’interface solide-liquide lors de la solidification à partir du bain fondu
L’objectif de l’équipe MCA est l’analyse des mécanismes fondamentaux et des processus dynamiques intervenant dans la formation, la sélection et la stabilité des microstructures de solidification, la ségrégation ainsi que la structure de grains, en relation avec les questionnements issus des procédés industriels. Plus précisément:
-les microstructures de solidification, qui contrôlent les propriétés des matériaux élaborés en métallurgie et sont des structures dissipatives modèles pour les phénomènes hors équilibre (physique non-linéaire).
-La croissance de semi-conducteurs et la formation des défauts qui impactent les propriétés électriques du matériau final.
La difficulté du sujet vient du fait que la formation du solide à partir du bain fondu met en jeu des mouvements convectifs dans le fluide, induisant ainsi des couplages entre des phénomènes dynamiques dont les échelles de longueur et de temps sont réparties sur plusieurs ordres de grandeur.
L’équipe conduit des recherches expérimentales associées à des simulations numériques. L'originalité de l’équipe vient de ses compétences spécifiques et reconnues dans trois domaines :
-La caractérisation in situ et en temps réel de la solidification, qui donne accès à la dynamique de formation et de croissance des structures, sur les systèmes modèles transparents (techniques optiques : observation directe et interférométrie) ou sur des alliages opaques (radiographie et topographie X-synchrotron et radiographie avec une source X de laboratoire).
-L’analyse de l’influence du mode de transport sur la formation et la sélection de la microstructure de solidification, ainsi que sur la transition colonnaire-équiaxe (CET) par des expériences uniques en microgravité et au sol sur des alliages transparents et métalliques.
-L’analyse quantitative des expériences requiert une comparaison poussée avec les simulations numériques les plus en pointes, que l’équipe réalise en interne ou dans le cadre de collaborations avec des groupes nationaux et internationaux internationalement reconnus.
